Salukis Drop Match at Belmont

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Saluki Women's Volleyball team fell in quick fashion on Thursday at Curb Event Center.
Coming into the match, it was a battle of top-three teams in the Missouri Valley Conference. The Salukis were sitting in third at 9-7 (3-1 MVC) and the Bruins were in second at 7-8 (4-0 MVC). The stage was set for an exciting match in the Music City.
The first set opened up with the Bruins firing on all cylinders, and the Salukis struggled to find an answer. Belmont had an outstanding 0.412 hitting percentage with 16 kills and only 2 errors on 34 attacks. The Salukis only had 10 kills with 5 errors on 37 total attacks (0.135 hitting percentage). Both teams had plenty of offensive opportunities, but it was ultimately the Bruins who capitalized on the opportunities and answered the Saluki offense with solid defensive play. The set ended on a 4-0 Bruin run, ending with a service ace. Set one was taken by Belmont, 25-15.
Set two saw the same offensive story for the Salukis. On the set, SIU tallied 10 kills and 7 errors on 36 attacks for a hitting percentage of 0.083. But, the Salukis played much better defense and forced more Bruin errors this set. The Bruin offense had significantly slowed down, but they were simply outplaying the Salukis. A bad set and a Belmont kill ended the second set. Set two went to Belmont, 25-20.
Set three saw the best start for the Salukis. SIU jumped out to an 14-9 lead and had started to steal some momentum from the Bruins. A Saluki service error started a scoring spree for Belmont, sending them on a 9-0 run, giving them a 18-14 lead. All momentum SIU had began to take had been lost. The Salukis were down, but truly not out. They were aggressive, but not executing the way they desired. Four of the Bruins' last five points came off Saluki attack errors. A kill by Belmont's Sydnee Nelson sealed the point, set, and match for the Bruins. The Bruins took set three by a score of 25-20.
After the match, Head Coach Brittany Harry said, "Belmont is a really well-rounded team and our offense was not very good tonight. Even though we had more digs, at the end of the day if you can't produce kills, winning is going to be really tough. I thought we might have a shot to get to a 4th set when we were up 14–9 in the 3rd but ultimately our hitting errors helped Belmont to a 9 point run in one rotation. This team is very young, tonight there were rotations when we had five freshmen on the court. We have to keep learning and on working on how to improve for the next match."
