Tim Simay, MacIntosh Come Up Clutch in 5-3 win over Seton Hall

CARBONDALE, Ill. - Tim Simay's three RBIs and a clutch outing from the Southern Illinois bullpen paved the way for a 5-3 victory over Seton Hall Friday night at Itchy Jones Stadium. The victory broke a six-game losing streak for the Salukis and was their first win at home this season.
The Pirates opened the game with two quick runs on a passed ball and an RBI groundout, taking an early lead on Southern's Friday starter Andrew Evans. They tacked on another in the third when Aidan Sengenberger collected his second RBI on a single to left field.
Seton Hall hurler Steven Svenson was in a groove early, holding the Saluki offense to their 11th-straight scoreless inning before Tim Simay broke the seal in the bottom of the third with an RBI single.
The Mill Creek, Ga., native had his second run-scoring single of the game in the fifth, and then helped Julio Guerrero tie the game at three by getting caught in a rundown and forcing a late throw home.
Evans eventually settled in, pitching through the sixth inning and earning a quality start. The Kansas State transfer allowed two earned runs on four hits, struck out six and walked four.
With two outs in the top of the seventh, Seton Hall managed to load the bases with a chance to retake the lead. Jack MacIntosh (W, 1-1) came fresh out of the bullpen into a nightmare situation, but struck out Sengenberger to end the threat.
Tim Simay teamed up with Guerrero once again to give SIU its first lead on a line drive single to left center. Cecil Lofton moved Simay over to third on a single to right, and Kristian Sprawling brought him home with a fielder's choice.
"We needed somebody to break the ice offensively," Head Coach Lance Rhodes said. "No better guy than Tim to step up and do that."
A two-run lead was more than enough for MacIntosh, who earned his first victory of the season after 2.1 no-hit innings, striking out three in the effort.
Stephen Curry (L, 0-1) took the loss for the Pirates after giving up the go-ahead run.
"It's really good to get that win out of the way," Tim Simay said. "Now we're just gonna have to do it again tomorrow."

SIU will look to win its first series of the season Saturday at 2 p.m.
