CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Arkansas State Red Wolves stormed out to a big lead early and never looked back as Southern fell 11-5 Tuesday night.
Two powerful swings set A-State firmly ahead in the second inning: a three-run home run from Patrick Engskov and a three-run double by Evan Griffis established a six-run advantage after two.
A combination of Ckyler Tengler and Jelle Van Der Lelie kept the Salukis scoreless through four innings.
After Griffis widened the lead with a two-run home run, Mason Schwalbach put SIU on the board with a two-run shot of his own, his second home run in as many games. Kye Watson nearly went back-to-back, but settled for a triple and was brought home on a sacrifice fly from Henry Kufa.
The Red Wolves all but put the game out of reach with three more runs in the seventh and eighth, giving them 11 runs on the day.
Xavier Farnum highlighted one last push from Southern in the bottom of the ninth, putting his first home run of the season over the left-field wall to add two more runs.
Engskov and Griffis combined to knock in 10 of ASU's 11 runs.
Dylan Petrey, Gio de Graauw, Nolan Hand, and Tyson Greene each tallied a scoreless frame out of the bullpen for SIU.
Alec Ammerman (L, 0-1) took the loss for the Salukis.
UP NEXT
The Salukis continue their road conference slate at Bradley for a three-game series beginning Friday in Peoria.
