CARBONDALE, Ill. - In its final home game of the regular season, the Southern Illinois University softball team (30-15 overall, 18-6 MVC) recorded a dominant, 10-1, victory over SIUE in five innings on Wednesday night.
A pair of home runs led the way for the Salukis in the win as Emily Williams launched a three-run shot in the third inning and Mikaela Coburn hit her first-career grand slam in the fourth.
Freshman Hailey Lucas (9-7) picked up the win after tossing two scoreless innings out of the bullpen. Lucas, Emma Gipson, and Brooklynn Danielson combined to allow just two hits, one run (zero earned), and three walks with six total strikeouts on Wednesday.
Gipson got the start and fired a scoreless first inning, stranding a Cougar at second.
In the following inning, a two-out error allowed an unearned run to score for SIUE, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead.
Lucas entered the game in the third with the Salukis trailing by a run and proceeded to toss a 1-2-3 inning with two strikeouts.
Southern Illinois followed the strong inning by Lucas up with a four-run bottom of the third. Amanda Knutson tied the game at 1-1 with an RBI single to score Erin Lee. The very next batter was Williams who hit a three-run home run to left center to give Southern a 4-1 lead. The junior is up to 52 RBI on the year, the third-most in a season in program history.
After another scoreless frame by Lucas, SIU exploded for six runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 10-1 lead. Hayden Kurtz extended the advantage to 5-1 with an RBI single that scored Knutson. One batter later, Sydney Potter delivered an RBI double to bring home Brooklyn Pritchett, making it 6-1 in favor of the Salukis.
Sage Grann then drew a walk after a pitching change to load the bases for Coburn. In a 2-2 count, the junior outfielder launched a grand slam to left field to give Southern Illinois a 10-1 cushion. This was the first grand slam of Coburn's career and her third of the season.
Danielson came in for the fifth and finished off the game with two strikeouts and a scoreless final inning.
The 10-1 win improved SIU's record to 30-15 on the year, marking the fourth consecutive season the program has won at least 30 games.
