CARBONDALE, Ill. - Troy Shepard and Meade Johnson held Indiana State to just one run in Southern Illinois' narrow 2-1 victory over the Sycamores Saturday night at Itchy Jones Stadium.
The strong night from Shepard overshadowed a good performance from his counterpart in ISU's Ty Brooks. The two held each offense scoreless through three before each team scratched one run across in the fourth.
After Gabe Petrucelli stole second with two out in the bottom of the sixth, Tim Simay put SIU in the lead with a bloop RBI single to center field.
With over 100 pitches thrown, Shepard came out for the top of the seventh holding a 2-1 lead. After collecting the first out, a single from Colin Sander put the tying run on base. Shepard then threw the ball away on a potential pickoff, allowing Sander to advance to second. The Sycamore second baseman rounded the base trying to reach third on the error, but a perfect throw from Kye Watson backing up the play cut down Sander at third for the second out of the inning. Shepard would cash in his right fielder's effort by inducing a pop-up from Nomar Garcia.
The Coeur d' Alene, Idaho, native finished with seven complete innings pitched, allowing just one run on three hits with five strikeouts.
Normally Southern's Sunday starter, pitching coach Ryan McClaran turned to Meade Johnson to close out the contest. He delivered with two perfect frames, striking out the side in the ninth to earn his first save as a Saluki.
Shepard (W, 3-3) collected his much-deserved third victory of the season.
