CHICAGO, Ill. - The Southern Illinois University softball team (33-15 overall, 21-6 MVC) finished off the regular season with an 11-6 win on Saturday to complete the sweep at UIC.
During the win, Emily Williams broke the single-season RBI record with a three-run double in the third inning. This gave Williams 58 RBI on the year, surpassing a record of 57 that was set by Jackie Lis in 2023.
With the sweep, SIU secured the No. 2 seed for next week's Missouri Valley Conference tournament in Carbondale, Ill. The Salukis' first game of the tournament will be on Thursday, May 7, at 3 p.m. against the winner of No. 3 Murray State and No. 6 Evansville. The game between the Racers and Purple Aces will take place on Wednesday, May 6, at 3 p.m.
Brooklynn Danielson (11-1) picked up the win after posting a line of 3.0 innings pitched, three hits, one run, one walk, and three strikeouts out of the bullpen. Emily Delgado (5) earned her fifth save with 1.2 scoreless and hitless innings pitched.
Mikaela Coburn paced the Salukis with three hits and also had two runs scored, two RBI, one double, and one triple. Williams' three RBI led the team, while the junior's two hits were tied for the second-most on the team with Maleah Blomenkamp, Sydney Potter, Hayden Kurtz, and Jordan Stewart.
Southern Illinois scored early and often on Saturday, plating two runs in the top of the first on a two-out single by Kurtz.
The Flames responded with a three-run home run in the bottom of the first to take a 3-2 lead.
In the top of the second, SIU tied the game at 3-3 after Blomenkamp hit an RBI single to score Coburn.
Both teams continued to trade blows as UIC retook the lead in the bottom of the second after an error by the Salukis. Through two, the hosts led, 4-3.
Southern Illinois went ahead with a five-run third inning. First it was Coburn delivering a two-out triple to score pinch runner Delaney Osborne and make it 4-4. The Salukis then took the lead after pinch hitter Haley Wilkerson hit an RBI double to give the visitors a 5-4 advantage.
After a pair of walks, Williams had her record-breaking moment with a three-run double, extending the lead to 8-4.Â
UIC scored another run in the bottom of the third to make it 8-5. It would remain a three-run game until the fifth when the Flames added on another, cutting the deficit to 8-6.
Southern Illinois struck for three insurance runs in the top of the sixth. Erin Lee delivered a two-out, two-run double to drive in Kurtz and Potter, pushing the advantage to 10-6. It then became 11-6 after an RBI double by Coburn.
Delgado relieved Danielson with two runners on in the sixth. The junior proceeded to get out of the inning unscathed after back-to-back flyouts to center.
In the bottom of the seventh, Delgado closed out the game with a scoreless frame, finishing off SIU's 11-6 victory.
