Salukis Shine in Sweep of SIU-Edwardsville

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - The Southern Illinois Women's Volleyball team looked to get back in the win column after dropping four straight. They did just that in their sweep over the SIU-Edwardsville Cougars on Friday at the Winfield Dunn Center.
Friday morning's match between the sister schools was the fifth all-time. Coming into the match, the Cougars had a 3-1 edge in the all-time series, but the Salukis closed that gap with their win today.
The first set was intense. The Salukis looked refreshed and eager to play their best volleyball. The Cougars answered and responded with their own aggression and determination. The Dawgs grew several small leads thanks to some phenomenal serving and good play to support those serves. However, the Cougars did not go down without a fight. At one point in the set, the Salukis were up a whopping eight points. But, it was the Cougars who held Southern at set point, 25-24. The Salukis were not backing down though. After an attack error and service ace in favor of the Dawgs, it was now SIU who had set point at hand. But, the point went the other way. However, the next two points went to the Dawgs, with the final point of the set coming off a service ace from Julia Laidig. The Salukis took set one 28-26.
Set two was another battle. This set was more back-and-forth and an even match up throughout. Both teams had momentum swings and scoring runs. Most notably, the Salukis had a six-point run, all off the service from McKenzie Moeller, who tallied five service aces throughout the span of the match. The Salukis got the better end of this set though. Despite having to go over twenty-five points again, a set victory is all that matters. Southern won set two, 26-24.
The third and final set was one to remember for SIU. Southern grew a nine-point lead (17-8) off the back of some great scoring runs. One of those was highlighted once again by McKenzie Moeller as she tallied three service aces over seven straight serves. Despite the large lead for the Salukis, the Cougars wanted to fight - and they did. They brought it back to a two-point game (24-22) thanks to a five-point run, but the Salukis still held set point over the Cougars. It was ultimately Lillian Dempkey who had a surprise kill to win the point, set, and match for the Dawgs. SIU took set three by a score of 25-22.
After the match, Head Coach Brittany Harry said, "We are a young group and we are able to string good point runs together. At the same time, we are still working through keeping leads and maintaining. But that's getting better every day and I was proud we closed out the 3 set sweep. Jillian had a great match with 23 digs and McKenzie was very steady all the way around. We just have to work on getting better every match."
