Dixon Scores Twice as Salukis Extend School Record in Conference Opener

EVANSVILLE, Ind. — Southern Illinois women's soccer earned a 2-1 victory over Evansville on Saturday night at Arad McCutchan Stadium. Maya Dixon scored twice in the opening 26 minutes before the Purple Aces cut the lead early in the second half. The win marked Southern's sixth consecutive victory, extending the school record.

The Salukis controlled much of the opening half while Evansville applied pressure. Southern broke through in the 24th minute when Dixon found the back of the net, with Victoria Hassan providing the assist for a 1-0 lead.

Just two minutes later, the Hassan-Dixon chemistry produced another goal. Dixon scored again in the 26th minute, again assisted by Hassan, to make it 2-0.

Southern took the 2-0 advantage into halftime. The Purple Aces came out with increased pressure to start the second half and scored in the 48th minute, cutting the lead to 2-1. It was the first goal allowed by SIU since August 20.

Southern's defense held firm the rest of the way, keeping Evansville off the scoreboard and securing the 2-1 victory.

The win improved the Salukis to 7-2-0 overall and 1-0 in Missouri Valley Conference play.

UP NEXT
The Salukis return home to continue conference play against Murray State on Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Lew Hartzog Track & Field Complex in Carbondale.
