The office of the MVC Commissioner, Doug Elgin, is located in St. Louis, Missouri. In addition to other services, the MVC recognizes an athlete of the week in each in-season sport, annually recognizes athletes for academic excellence, and annually presents a traveling Commissioner's Trophy to the school with the most outstanding total program athletic performance. Southern won the Commissioner's Trophy in 1989-90, 1990-91, and in 1994-95. In the sport of football, Southern is affiliated with the Gateway Football Conference.
