Carbondale, Ill. - The Southern Illinois University men's and women swimming and diving teams both lost dual meets to Western Kentucky on Saturday, Jan. 18 at the SIU Rec Center Pool.
The Saluki women (2-5) came up five points short in a 124-119 loss to Western Kentucky (16-3) of the Sunbelt Conference.
"We swam great. They should have beaten us by more, but we won the close races and had a great team effort. This shows that our training worked and I couldn't be happier," said Goelz, SIU women's coach.
Briley Bergen and Suzanne Souders each won two events to lead the Saluki women. Souders set her SIU-best in the 100 back (58.85) and also won the 200 IM (2:09.86). Bergen won the 500 free (5:08.21) and 1000 free (10:32.10). Liz McGowan added a win in the 200 free in a personal best 1:55.02 and Melinda Page picked up a win in her first attempt in the 100 free (54.15).
The SIU men (3-3) fell 139-104 to the Hilltoppers despite a strong effort by Derek Helvey, who won two events.
"We ran into a tough Western Kentucky team and they swam well today. We need to keep getting better and get ready for next week," said Rick Walker, SIU's men's coach.
Helvey picked up victories in the 200 and 500 free. His time of 1:40.64 in the 200 free is a career-high, while his 4:36.54 in the 500 free is a season-high.
The Salukis also claimed the top four spots in both dives with Dave Likar winning the 1-Meter and Jake Sinclair winning the 3-Meter. Marcelo Possato finished second in the 100 back with a career-best 50.57.
The SIU men and women will host SMS next week in a dual on January 25, 2003 at the SIU Rec Center Pool.
Note: Western Kentucky's Gord Veldman set an SIU pool record with his time of 48.93 in the 100 backstroke.
