Jan. 23, 2003
St. Louis, Mo. - Southern Illinois University men's and women's swimming and diving won three of the four weekly Missouri Valley Conference Swimmer and Diver of the Week awards. On Wednesday, January 22, Derek Helvey, Suzanne Souders and Jake Sinclair were honored by the MVC for their outstanding performances.
Souders, a sophomore from Belleville, Ill., won the award for the third time this year after winning the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard backstroke against Western Kentucky in a narrow 124-119 loss. Her time of 58.85 in the 100 backstroke would be the third best in the Missouri Valley Conference if she already didn't have the top time. Her 200 individual medley time of 2:09.86 is third best in the Valley this year. She also won the award on October 2 and 29.
Helvey, a junior from Bartlett, Ill., was named men's swimmer of the week after winning the 200 and 500 free in a dual meet at home against Western Kentucky on Jan. 18. Helvey's 200 free time of 1:40.64 is third best in the Valley this year and his time of 4:36.54 in the 500 free would place him fourth if he wasn't already second on the list. The award is Helvey's first of his career.
Senior Jake Sinclair won the diving award for the third time this season after his win in the 3-meter diving competition with a score of 306.98. He also finished second in the 1-meter dive with a score of 266. Sinclair also won the award on October 29 and November 13.
The SIU men and women will be back in the pool on January 25 at the Rec Center Pool for a dual meet against SMS at 3 p.m.
