SIU Will Participate in 16th Annual STUDENT-Athlete Day
April 7, 2003
Carbondale, Ill. - Southern Illinois University student-athletes will be participating in the 16th annual celebration of National STUDENT-Athlete Day (April 6) this week.
National STUDENT-Athlete Day honors student-athletes who have achieved excellence in academics and athletics, while having made significant contributions to their school and/or community. SIU will use the week as an opportunity to connect with the youth of Carbondale.
"We use the day for an opportunity for our student-athletes to go out in the community and serve as role models for young people, and involve them in sports," said Kristina Therriault, Academic Coordinator at SIU.
Various student-athletes from SIU will visit three elementary schools in Carbondale during the week for fun day festivities. Eight different stations featuring warm-up, agility drills, relay races, jump rope, as well as football, basketball, softball, and volleyball skills will be set up for students to participate in and interact with each other.
The Salukis will be at Giant City School on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until 11:25 a.m., Parrish School on Thursday from 8:40 a.m. until 10 a.m., and Thomas School on Friday from 9 a.m. until 10:45 a.m.
National STUDENT-Athlete Day was created by the National Consortium for Academics and Sports (NCAS) and Northeastern University's Center for the Study of Sport in Society. It is co-sponsored by the NCAA and the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS).
