100 Student-Athletes Honored as Saluki Scholars

CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois University athletic department held its first annual "Saluki Scholars" academic awards banquet on Wednesday night at the Student Center.
Exactly 100 students were honored for achieving at least a 3.50 term grade point average during spring or fall semesters. Also recognized were the 16 student-athletes who receive endowed scholarships at SIU.
The banquet featured a keynote address by former U.S. Senator Paul Simon, who is the director of the SIU Public Policy Institute. Chancellor Walter Wendler and Director of Athletics Paul Kowalczyk also made remarks.
The banquet was sponsored by Randy Johnson and 710 Bookstore.
