Salukis finish second in 2015-16 All-Sports Trophy standings
Spurred by three conference championships and four second-place finishes in 2015-16, Southern Illinois placed second in the Missouri Valley Conference All-Sports Trophy standings for the second-consecutive year.
The Salukis won league titles in women's swimming & diving, men's golf and men's tennis, plus finished second in volleyball, men's indoor track & field, women's tennis and men's outdoor track & field. They also picked up a third-place showing in women's outdoor track & field. The Salukis' aggregate score of 3.50 was the best for SIU since the 2006-07 season (SIU was second that year at 3.41.)
Wichita State won the 2016 All-Sports championship, marking the fourth-straight season the Shockers have claimed the league's All-Sports crown. The title is the 10th in the past 13 years for Wichita State, which has won a league-high 22 times. The Shockers set a record by finishing first or second in 12 of the 15 sports they sponsor and claimed league championships in six sports.
Despite Wichita State's championship dominance, several schools also captured multiple league titles this year; Southern Illinois claimed three team titles and Bradley had two. Counting Wichita State this year, only five times since 1992-93 (merger of MVC men's and women's sports) has an institution had more than five team titles.
The All-Sports Trophy is based on a school's average finish in each of the sponsored championships by the Missouri Valley Conference. Teams are awarded one point for first, two for second, three for third, etc., and the total accumulated points are divided by the number of sports in which a particular school competes. Finishes in baseball, basketball, soccer, softball, tennis and volleyball are based on regular-season competition. All other sports are determined by finish at the championship tournament or championship meet.
