CARBONDALE, Ill. - - The Southern Illinios University Carbondale athletic department was honored with the USA Today/NCAA Foundation Academic Achievement Award.
SIUC improved its graduation rate this year to 59 percent, up from 37 percent a year ago and above the national average of 57 percent.
"We're certainly pleased with the recognition," Athletic Director Paul Kowalczyk said. "It reflects our department's commitment to academics and the hard work of our student-athletes."
The award was based on data provided by all universities and compiled through the U.S. Department of Education and the NCAA.
SIUC had the 10th-best improvement among Division I schools last year, tied with St. Bonaventure and Radford. Hofstra led the list with a 34 percent improvement.
