CARBONDALE, Ill. - The financial picture of the SIUC athletic department is much improved, athletic director Paul Kowalczyk announced Tuesday, though he said much work remains to be done.
Kowalczyk inherited an $800,000 deficit when he began as director in August, 2000. He said the department has trimmed $150,000 from that figure in the past year, cutting the deficit by 19 percent to $650,000.
"We're quite pleased with the progress we've made," Kowalczyk said. "But we stil need to increase our funding level if we're to have the kind of success our alums, fans and students expect from their athletic department."
The SIUC athletic department, with an annual budget of $6 million, sponsors 18 varsity sports.
