Swimming & Diving Teams Finish Third At Northwestern Invite

The Southern Illinois University men's and women's swimming and diving teams both finished third at the Northwestern Invite. The men's team scored 689 points, just behind hosting school and 20th ranked Northwestern University (800.5) and 24th ranked Purdue (1,123.5). Louisville men's team finished fourth at the Invite with a score of 209. The women's team scored 477 points to secure third behind #31 Purdue (1,170) and #21 Northwestern (1,078) and just ahead of the Louisville women's team (226).
The men's team were led by first place finisher in the 100 freestyle (45.56), senior Chrysanthos Papachrysanthou, sophomore Derek Helvey, who finished third in both the 400 individual medley (4:01.49) and 1,650 freestyle (16:02.55), and senior Corne Prozesky, who placed third in the 200 breaststroke (2:05.67) and fourth in the 100 breaststroke (58.32). Freshman Ivan Sanchez placed second in the 1,650 freestyle (16:00.22). Brent Menghini placed third both the 200 backstroke (1:5.81) and 200 butterfly (1:51.70). Edoardo Daelli finished fifth in the 200 freestyle (1:41.85) and eighth in the 100 freestyle (47.46). Senior Jeremiah Cortez finished fifth in the 100 butterfly (52.41). Junior Danilo Luna placed eighth in the 200 backstroke (1:56.22).
The men's relay teams had strong showings throughout the Invite. The team of Helvey, Prozesky, Menghini and Daelli placed second in the 800 freestyle relay (6:49.92). The 200 medley relay team (Menghini, Prozesky, Cortez and Papachrysanthou) finished second with a time of 1:34.09. The 400 freestyle team (Daelli, Cortez, Matt Glowacki, and Papachrysanthou) finished third with a time of 3:05.29.
The men's diving team had junior Joel Hanger (fifth) and freshman Devin Aikins (sixth) as their top finishers in the 3-meter dive, scoring 443.65 and 401.70 respectively. Aikins finished second in the 1-meter dive with a score of 268.30. Hanger (264.10) and senior Jake Sinclair (258.85) took fourth and fifth with junior Adam Peper finishing seventh (203.01) in the 1-meter dive.
The women's team had senior Brooke Radostits as their top finisher. She placed third in the 100 backstroke (57.81) and 200 backstroke (2:04.39). Sophomore Leane Pienaar placed fourth in the 1,650 freestyle (17:32.82). Senior Dana Morrell finished sixth (2:08.45) and junior Amber Mullins finished eighth in the 200 backstroke (2:09.67) to go with her seventh place in the 1,650 freestyle. Freshman Sarah Lenz placed eighth in in the 100 backstroke (1:01.44). Amy Legner finished eighth in the 100 breastroke (1:08.36) and Brigitta Olson finished eighth in the 100 butterfly (59.58). The women's 400 and 800 freestyle relay teams both finished fifth with times of 3:37.31 and 7:51.74.
Both teams will take some time off before returning to competition in a nonconference dual meet against Big 12 foe Missouri in Columbia, Missouri, Saturday December 7.
