Saluki Cheerleading
Who we are
The SIU cheer program consists of a Maroon (co-ed) and a White (all-girl) cheer team. The Maroon team consists of 5-6 couples and the White team consists of 12-16 female athletes. The Maroon team cheers for home football games, some away football games and men's home basketball. The White team cheers for home football games, women's basketball and home volleyball games. The Maroon and White team cheer at men's and women's basketball tournaments. The cheerleaders make special appearances and participate in community service activities.
What does it take to be a SIU cheerleader?
Our job as SIU cheerleaders is to increase the spirit at SIU athletic functions. We are looking for males and females who display a positive attitude and desire to cheer, someone with genuine spirit! We want the die-hard Saluki fan who will cheer his or her heart rain or shine, fans or no fans. Do you think you have what it takes?
Tryouts for the 2008-09 Saluki Cheerleading Squad will be held April 4 and 5.
April 4th - 5:30 - 10 p.m. - tryout material review and stunt clinic.
April 5th - 8 a.m. - 8 p.m. - Tryouts

Requirements for 2008-2009 tryouts
Co-ed Requirements:
Minimum GPA of 2.0 (proof will need to be submitted with application)
Conditioning: Must be able to run a mile in less than 10 minutes and must maintain a fit personal appearance.
Females: Females standing tumbling: back tuck; 1 optional standing pass (suggestions - standing back handspring back; toe back; standing full; standing 2 or 3 to a full, etc)
Females running tumbling: 2 passes - one should be a round-off back handspring back tuck; additional elite pass (suggestions - BHS layout or full, whip to full, Arabians, etc.)
Females jumps: toe-touch, double toe-touch, hurdler, and pike.
Males: Males jumps: toe-touch and pike
Males tumbling: optional but highly recommended
Stunting (flyers and bases): toss to hands extension (or toss extension), chair to hands extension (This must be done with another tryout candidate) Up to 2 additional stunts - at least one of which should show other body positions.
Fight song: Males and females will be expected to execute sharp motions and a toss to hands extension.
All-girl Requirements:

Running tumbling: 2 passes - one should be a round-off back handspring back tuck; additional elite pass (suggestions - BHS layout or full, whip to full, Arabians, etc.)
Jumps: Toe-touch, hurdler, and pike
Stunting (flyers): If you consider yourself a flyer, you should be able to demonstrate an extension full down; lib cradle; and up to 2 additional stunts in which you demonstrate other body positions and single full down.
(Bases): If you consider yourself a base or back (indicate which position at tryouts and you may try out for more than one), you should be able to execute an extension full down; lib cradle; and up to 2 additional stunts in which you demonstrate other body positions and single full down.
Fight song: Females will be expected to execute sharp motions.
