Damien Brigham enters his second season as an assistant coach at Southern Illinois University.Â
In his first season as the pole vault/multis coach at SIU, Brigham's athletes won two MVC titles, tallied four top-3 finishes at conference meets, set a school record and tallied two other top-10 school marks. Under Brigham's tutelage, Madison Meyer became the first Saluki since 2012 to win the pentathlon at the conference meet. She followed that up by taking home MVC Outdoor Most Valuable Athlete honors after she won the long jump and repeated as the conference's heptathlon champion. Meyer's 5380 points at the conference meet broke Malakiah Love's 2011 school record.
Brigham came to SIU from Alabama A&M where he served as associate head coach for the 2017-18 season. The Dallas, Texas native will coach Southern’s multi-event athletes as well as its pole vaulters.
Brigham brings a wealth of coaching experience at all levels to Carbondale. Prior to his time at Alabama A&M, Brigham spent a season as an assistant at Coastal Carolina University, where he helped create training schedules for each athlete, developed strategies to help student-athletes improve and coordinated fundraising activities, amongst other duties.
Prior to Coastal Carolina, Brigham spent three seasons at McNeese State in Lake Charles, La., where he coached the Cowboys’ sprints, relays, hurdles, multi-events and horizontal jumps.Â
Before his stint at McNeese State, Brigham made coaching stops at Paul Quinn College, Stillman College, and American International. While at Paul Quinn College, Brigham coached Adolphus Jones, who competed internationally for Saint Kitts and Nevis. In 2008, Brigham helped start the track and field program at Texas College in Tyler, Texas.Â
