Kelsey Gonzalez is in her first season as an assistant coach with the Saluki softball team. Gonzalez enters the role following stints at SIU as a student assistant and player.
As an assistant, Gonzalez coaches the infield and focuses on working with the middle infielders. She will also work with the team on its hitting. Her in game duties include coaching first base. She also plays a critical role in recruiting.
In 2016-17, the Naperville, Illinois native worked with the team as a student assistant, helping the Salukis to the 2017 Missouri Valley Conference Tournament Championship and the program's 10th NCAA Tournament appearance.
Gonzalez had a highly successful career as a player at SIU. The Bolingbrook, Illinois native started at shortstop in all four of her seasons and was a team captain her junior and senior years. Â In her time as a Saluki, Gonzalez hit .283 with nine home runs, 65 RBI and 24 steals. Her 113 runs scored had her in a tie for ninth all-time at SIU by the end of her career. She was named to the All-Missouri Valley Conference second team in 2016 when she hit .309 with a home run, 11 RBI and 10 steals.

She also excelled in the classroom. She was named to MVC Scholar Athlete Teams in 2014, 2015 and 2016 and won the MVC Commissioner’s Academic Award in 2015.
Gonzalez graduated from Naperville Central High School in 2013.
