02/22/2018 | 7:54:00 | Track and Field
The Southern Illinois track & field teams travel to Cedar Falls, Iowa to compete at the 2018 Missouri Valley Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by the University of Northern Iowa, beginning Saturday, Feb. 24 at the UNI Dome.
The Saluki men will be looking for their first MVC Indoor Track & Field Championship since 2012 while SIU's women will try to hoist the MVCÂ indoor conference championship for the first time since 2009.
Pre-Championship Poll
The Saluki men were picked to finish fourth in the MVC Pre-Championship poll, as they received two first place votes and tallied 64 points to finish behind Illinois State, Northern Iowa and Indiana State. The Redbirds were also picked to win on the women's side, where the Salukis were slotted third.
Nationally Ranked
A pair of throwers are all but locked in for the NCAA Indoor Championships in March, led by Jared Kern. Kern has the fifth-longest throw in the NCAA this season at 66'-5.5", while Isaac Ingram has the 13th-best weight throw in the nation with the top-16 advancing to NCAA Indoor meet.
Nationally Ranked in the Top-75
5 | Jared Kern | Shot Put | 66'-5" // 19.93m
13 | Isaac Ingram | Weight Throw | 71'-7.50" // 21.83m

56 | Ricky Hurley | Weight Throw | 64'-7.25" // 19.69m

68 | Sam Sikon | Shot Put | 57'-11.25" // 17.66m
Needing a big markÂ
Several Salukis are on the cusp of qualifying for the NCAA Indoor Championships, including Adam Kessler and Alexis Roberson. Kessler ranks 26th in the shot put while Roberson is also ranked 26th in the weight throw. Warren Hazel, who hasn't competed since he clocked a season-best quarter-mile time of 46.79 at the Music City Challenge on Feb. 9, is set to run both the 200m and the 400m at the 2018 MVC Indoor Championships.
Athletes to Watch
Kezia Martin (Triple Jump) - Martin has been hampered by a hamstring injury all season, but when she is healthy she's one of the best triple jumpers in the conference. The Jefferson City, Mo. native has led the conference in the event all season, as she jumped 40'-9" (12.42m) at the Saluki Fast Start on Dec. 9. She improved upon that mark at the Music City Challenge with her jump of 40'-9.5" (12.43m). Martin is one of three Salukis looking to repeat at the conference indoor meet, as she can become the eight athlete in MVC history, and the fourth in school history, to repeat as the conference's indoor triple jump champion. Martin would join Christina Phillippou, Inna Turevsky and Malakiah Love as the only Salukis to repeat in the event.Â
Isaac Ingram (Weight Throw) -Â Ingram will try to become the sixth in Valley history, and the fourth in school history, to repeat in the weight throw at the MVC Indoor Championships. Ingram won a year ago with a mark of 69'-6.25", and SIU has won three-straight MVC weight throw titles and nine of the last 12 overall. Ingram has won the weight at five of the six meets he has competed at this year, including at the Indiana Relays when he recorded his conference-leading mark of 71'-7.5" (21.83m).Â
Jared Kern (Shot Put)Â - Kern joins Martin and Ingram as Salukis looking to repeat over the weekend, as last season he broke John Smith's 32-year old meet record with a toss of 62'-7.25" to win his first career MVC title. Kern can become the ninth male thrower in Valley history, and the fourth in school history, to win back-to-back MVC shot put titles.
Ricky Hurley (Shot Put/Weight Throw) - Hurley has been on tear as of late, as he has set a personal-best in the shot put at five of SIU's seven meets this season and has recorded top-10 school marks in both the weight throw and the shot put this season. Hurley, who scored in the shot put with a sixth place finish at last year's conference indoor meet, comes into this year's meet with an excellent opportunity to score in both events, as he has the second-best mark in the conference in the weight throw (64'-7.25"//19.69m) and the third-best throw in the shot put (61'-5.5" // 18.73m).Â
Adam Kessler (Shot Put/Weight Throw) -Â Kessler will make his MVC Indoor Championship debut after he won a pair of Ohio Valley Conference shot put titles while at Eastern Illinois. Kessler, like Hurley, has the potential to at least score in both the shot and the weight, as he enters Saturday's competition with the second-best shot put toss and the fifth-best weight throw mark in the conference.
Tyjuana Eason (60-meter dash/200m)Â - Eason enters the conference meet ranked second to Illinois State's D'Jenne Egharevba in both the 60m and the 200m. Eason scored in both events a year ago, as she earned All-MVC honorable mention with her third place finish in the 200m and added a sixth place showing in the 60m dash. Eason will also most likely run a leg of the 4x400 relay, as SIU enters competition with the second-best time in the event at 3:45.38. The Saluki women's 4x400 relay team will try to win Southern's first MVC title in the event since 2005.
Shafiqua Maloney (400-meter dash/200m)Â - Maloney will run both the 200m and the 400m dashes at the MVC Indoor meet, and has a chance to reach the podium in both races. Maloney ran the fastest quarter-mile time in the MVC this season at the Music City Challenge when she clocked the only sub-55 second quarter mile in the Valley this season at 54.96. Maloney is third to Egharevba and Eason in the 200m at 24.21, which she ran at the Saluki Fast Start on Dec. 9. Southern hasn't won the 400m at the conference indoor meet in over 20 years, as Katrina Daniels last won the event in 1996.
Mystique Thompson (60m dash/200m)Â - Thompson, an eight-time All-MVC honoree, has finished second in the 60m dash at each of the past two conference indoor meets and has placed top-4 in the event all three times she has ran it. Thompson is one of three Salukis set to run the 60m dash.
Warren Hazel (400m/200m)Â - Hazel, a two-time national qualifier in the 400m, hasn't competed since he clocked a season-best quarter-mile time of 46.79 at the Music City Challenge on Feb. 9. He is set to run both the 200m and the 400m at the 2018 MVC Indoor Championships. Hazel will try to become the first Saluki since Sammy Biggs in 2008 to win the 400m at the MVC Indoor meet.
Alexis Roberson (weight throw)Â - A three-time MVC Women's Field Athlete of the Week honoree, Roberson has had a breakout season in the weight throw. The Jefferson City, Mo. native came into the season having never thrown beyond 60-feet in her career, and has since done so 21 times this season, including four throws over 65-feet. Roberson is the only thrower from the Valley to surpass 65' this season and her toss of 66'-3" (20.19m) is nearly three feet further then the next closest throw in the MVC.
Matthew Bigelow (Heptathlon/Long Jump) - One of 12 entered into the heptathlon, Bigelow has had a solid indoor season in which has set numerous PRs in multiple events. He set personal-bests in the 400m dash and 60 meter hurdles at the Vanderbilt Invitational on Jan. 19 and followed with lifetime-bests in the pole vault and the 60m dash at the Don DeNoon Invitational on Feb. 3. At last season's MVC indoor meet, Wichita State claimed four of the top-five spots in the heptathlon. With the Shockers now competing in the American Athletic Conference, it should leave for a wide open race in the heptathlon.
Dominating the weight
The Saluki women have won exactly half (11-of-22) of the MVC weight throw titles since the conference began contesting the event in 1996. Southern has won 10 of the last 12 MVC weight throw titles, including an eight-year title streak from 2005-12. SIU's most recent win in the event came in 2017, when Freya Block struck gold during her senior indoor season.
The Saluki men have been almost as dominate, winning 14 of 34 (41.2%) MVC weight throw titles since 1979. Southern has won nine of the last 12 titles, including Isaac Ingram's win a year ago.Â
Longest Drought by Event (Women)
The Saluki women have never won the 60-meter dash dating back to 1985 when the event was extended five meters, from the 55-meter dash to the 60-meter dash. Three Salukis are scheduled to run the race on Saturday, Mystique Thompson, Bri'Anna Branch and Tyjuana Eason. Thompson broke the school record at the 2016 MVC Indoor Championships en route to a runner-up finish, as she ran 7.46.
Longest Drought by Event (Men)
The Saluki men's longest streak without a conference title comes in the 4x400 relay, with SIU's last win coming in 1990. This year's 4x400 squad will try to put an end to that streak in what will be the final event of the 2018 championships, with the race set to get underway at 4:55 p.m.
