Men's Tennis Wins Three Matches At ITA Regional

Wichita, Kan. - The Southern Illinois University Carbondale men's tennis team ended the fall season by winning three matches at the ITA Mid-American Region V Singles and Doubles Championship in Wichita, Kansas on October 18-22.
SIU sophomore Peter Bong won two consolation matches in the singles main draw and freshman Richard Booth won one qualifying singles match in an attempt to reach the main draw.
Bong opened play on Friday, October 19 with a 6-1, 6-3 loss to Mark Sewell of Wichita State and bounced back to defeat Pavel Hanek of SMS 8-5 in a pro set format in backdraw play. On Saturday Bong beat Brian Knepper of Colorado 9-7 before being knocked out of the tournament by Shri Sudhakar of Tulsa 8-3.
In doubles play, Bong and Booth lost their opening match 8-5 to Montenegro and McClure of Drake on Friday.
Booth won his opening qualifying match 6-1, 6-4 over Marijan Panzic of Bradley but fell one match short of reaching the main draw when he lost 6-3, 6-3 to Sean Monk of Tulsa on Thursday.
Julian Angel Botero lost his only match in the qualifying round to Tobias Kronlien of Oklahoma 6-1, 6-2 on Thursday.
The 17-team field of Midwest universities included Indiana State, Oklahoma State, Tulsa, Drake, SMS, Nebraska, Evansville, Illinois State, Oklahoma, Colorado, Oral Roberts, UMKC, Creighton, Bradley, Southern Illinois and host Wichita State.
