CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois University's athletic department was one of 10 institutions nationwide selected to receive a literacy grant from Verizon Corp., the school announced Monday.
The Salukis will use the money to purchase t-shirts and new books and distribute them to elementary students at Lewis School this week as part of the "Verizon Reads with the NCAA Week."
Student-athletes will be visiting Lewis School Monday through Friday as part of an ongoing program of community service and outreach.
The athletic department will also sponsor a pizza party with the men's basketball team for the classroom that wins the "Reading is Fun" poster contest.
