SIU Men In Fourth After Day One Of MVCs

The Southern Illinois University Carbondale women's track team won the distance medley relay in a school record 11:44.48, and sophomore Latrice Gray won the high jump with a career best 5 foot, 7 3/4 inch jump, to lead the Salukis to third place (41 points) position after day one at the 2001 Missouri Valley Conference Track & Field Championships at the Student Rec Center.
In addition to Gray's high jump title and the distance medley relay won by Becky Cox, Marian Appiah-Kubi, Julia Roundtree, and Noa Beitler, SIU?s Rimma Turevsky (18-9 3/4 - long jump) finished second, Katie Meehan (17:57.25 - 5000-meters) and Caryn Poliquin (58-7 1/2 - weight throw) finished third, and Marina Shafran (5-5 3/4 - high jump) finished sixth.
Illinois State (53 pts.) and Indiana State (43) lead SIU (41), while Wichita State (29), Northern Iowa (9), Drake (6), and Southwest Missouri (5) trail the Salukis in the women's competition.
The Saluki men (24 points) ended the first day in fourth place behind a second place finish in the high jump by Carbondale's Joe Hill (6-9 3/4). Nyles Stuart (long jump-23-11 1/2) and the distance medley relay team of Joe Ziebert, Ryan Jones, Steve Orange, and Ryan Hauser finished third (10:01.83), and Adam Judge threw a personal best 62 feet, 2 1/2 inches in the weight throw to take home fourth place honors.
Illinois State (42 pts.), Northern Iowa (40), and Indiana State (28) lead SIU (24) in the men's competition. Drake (11), Wichita State (4), and Southwest Missouri State (3) round out the men's field.
The Salukis had ten total all-MVC performers (individuals finishing in the top three and first place relay team) in the first day of the meet. The events are scored (10, 8, 6, 4, 2, 1) from first to sixth place in individual and relay events.
The MVC Indoor Championships will resume on Saturday, February 24, at 11 a.m. with the women's triple jump and conclude with the men's 4x400 meter relay at 2:55 p.m., followed by the awards ceremonies. The MVC Indoor Championships will cost $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for children.
