Carbondale, Ill. -
The Southern Illinois University men's tennis team opens the 2001 spring season at the Missouri Valley Conference Individual Championships, hosted by Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.
The Salukis will take three new team members to the MVC championships, which is an important tournament to begin the season.
"This is one of the most important tournaments of the year because the guys have a chance to win their position in the conference and set a tone for the season," head tennis coach Missy Jeffrey said. "All of our guys that are returning are moving up a spot, so I'm looking forward to seeing how they respond. I also want to see how well our new players adjust to playing at this level."
All ten MVC schools will participate in the event. Ten titles will be up for grabs (7 singles and 3 doubles). Indiana State University won five of the seven singles titles and two of the three doubles titles in 2000, dominating the MVC Individual Championships.
