The Southern Illinois University Carbondale men's and women's track teams had some solid performances but neither could take home the trophy at the McDonald's Invitational on Saturday, January 27. The Saluki women finished second overall (87.40 pts) to Austin Peay State University (103 pts), while the men wound up in third place (82 pts.), behind Wallace State (Ala.) Community College (138 pts.) and Eastern Illinois University (85.83 pts.).
"I'm dissapointed that we didn't do better as a team, but I'm happy with some of our individual performances. Our sprinters and jumpers are banged up ad we needed more points from them to win," said Don DeNoon, Saluki women's track coach.
"I wanted to win the meet, but I think we had a better effort than the first meet. Joe Hill, Dan Stone, Kevins Mills, Dan Harrell ad especially Adam Judge really performed well for us at this meet. Injuries have hurt us and kept us from finishing a little higher. We are getting better though," stated Cameron Wright, Saluki men's coach.
The Saluki women were led by the victories of Becky Cox in the 3000 meters (10:26.55) and Katie Meehan in the 5000 meters (18:15.45). Caryn Poliquin finished second in the shot put (43-10 3/4), following her school record and NCAA provisional qualifying hammer throw of 59-4 1/4 on Friday. Noa Beitler (2nd-mile, 5:00.82), Latrice Gray and Marina Shafran (Tied for 2nd-High Jump, 5-6), Rimma Turevsky (3rd-long jump, 17-11), and Shaneka Williams (3rd-60m, 7.85) all added strong performances for the Salukis.
Wichita State was third with 84.40 points, followed by Missouri-Kansas City (47), Tennessee Tech (31), Eastern Illinois (30.20), Lincoln University (30), Wallace State (24), McKendree College (22), Murray State (10), Tennessee-Martin (10), and Bradley (2).
Saluki junior Joe Hill won the high jump with a 6-10 1/4 mark and Dan Stone won the pole vault with a 15-1 height to lead the SIU men. Kevin Mills (2nd-60m, 6.90 & 3rd-200m, 22.54), Daniel Harrell (2nd-pole vault, 14-1 1/4), Nyles Stuart (3rd-triple jump, 47-11), and David Readle (3rd-shot put, 51-8 3/4) also had good performances for the Salukis.
