Sunnyvale, Calif. -
Erin Stremsterfer hit an RBI single in the bottom of the third inning to give Southern Illinois University its only run of the game as the Salukis went on to defeat San Jose State by a score of 1-0 in the consolation championship of the 15th Annual National Invitational Softball Tournament at Twin Creeks Sports Complex.
The win, which marked SIU's fourth straight, enabled the Salukis to close out the weekend at 4-2 as they finished behind tournament champion No. 4 California and runner-up No. 12 Iowa.
Netty Hallahan reached on an error by San Jose State second baseman Amy Walter to start things off in the bottom of the third. After Haley Viefhaus grounded out to first and Amanda Rexroat popped up to second, Stremsterfer then dug in and smacked a two-out single to center to score Hallahan from third giving SIU its only run as the Dawgs held on to the 1-0 win.
Stremsterfer tossed four scoreless no-hit innings en route to her eighth win (8-2) on the hill. Throwing six and two-thirds innings, Stremsterfer struck out four while allowing just one hit. Sophomore Katie Kloess then relieved Stremsterfer in the top of the seventh. With two out and runners on second and third, Kloess caught Becca Baldridge looking for the final out of the game to pick up her first save of the year.
Offensively, the Salukis combined for four hits compliments of singles by Stremsterfer, Hallahan, Julie Meier, and Jenny Guenther. In addition, Stremsterfer was named to the all-Tournament team for her efforts marking the second time this season, she garnered the honor.
SIU, now 10-6 on the season, will return to action on Tuesday, Mar. 13 when the Salukis head to Moraga, Calif., to take on St. Mary's College in a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
