TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The Southern Illinois University softball team (21-13 overall, 10-4 MVC) put together a strong showing in game three of its series at Indiana State, defeating the Sycamores, 13-3, on Monday.
Across the final two innings, SIU scored 10 runs with six coming in the sixth. As a team, Southern finished the game with 16 hits and one error in the win.
Emily Delgado (6-3) picked up the win and finished with a line of 6.1 innings pitched, seven hits, three runs, one walk, and six strikeouts. Sophomore Emma Gipson also pitched and allowed one hit and no runs with a strikeout in 0.2 innings pitched.
Four Salukis recorded multiple hits in the series finale, with Mikaela Coburn and Amanda Knutson leading the way with three hits each. Maleah Blomenkamp and Jordan Stewart both registered two hits in the win.
Southern Illinois hit a pair of home runs on Monday as juniors Sydney Potter and Emily Williams both went deep against Indiana State. Potter's came in the first inning while Williams' was a grand slam in the seventh, her second grand slam in as many days.
SIU got off to a quick start in game three as Potter crushed a two-run home run to score Grann and give the visitors an early, 2-0 lead. The home run was the catcher's 16th of the season. Potter is now one away from tying the single-season home run record, which was set at 17 by Jackie Lis ('23) and Emily Williams ('25).
Indiana State recorded three hits in the bottom of the first, but Delgado escaped unscathed to keep Southern Illinois ahead by two.
Delgado put up a 1-2-3 second inning and a scoreless third, setting the stage for the Salukis to add insurance in the fourth. Stewart came around to score on a Blomenkamp fielder's choice, giving Southern a 3-0 advantage.
The Sycamores were unable to record a baserunner against Delgado in the bottom of the fourth and fifth as the junior retired nine consecutive batters between the third and fifth innings.
In the top of the sixth, SIU exploded for six runs to take a 9-0 lead. Stewart and Coburn scored on a Blomenkamp single, who then scored on a Haley Wilkerson double.
Knutson drove in Southern's seventh run of the game, while Hayden Kurtz drove in two more with a two-run single.
Indiana State got going offensively in the bottom of the sixth, plating three to make it 9-3.
Southern quickly answered with a four-run seventh inning. All four runs came off the bat of Williams, who hit her second grand slam of the series. This gave SIU a 13-3 lead entering the bottom of the seventh.
There, Gipson relieved Delgado with one out in the inning and worked around a single and an error to finish off Southern's 13-3 win.
