Southern Illinois University Carbondale (10-14-1, 4-4 MVC) tied the University of Illinois (10-11-1, 1-2 Big Ten) in an eight inning non-conference game on Wednesday, March 28, at Abe Martin Field. The game was stopped after eight innings due to darkness. Illinois completed a 10-6 victory over the Salukis before the teams' regularly schedule game in Champaign on May 2nd.Â
Carbondale portion of the game details:
"I'm very discouraged. I thought that should have been a win. Illinois walked ten guys, threw two wild pitches, balked, hit a guy and we didn't make an error. How can we not win a game like that. It's frustrating, they did everything they could to hand us the game and we didn't take advantage of it," said Dan Callahan, Saluki head coach.
After Illinois took a 1-0 lead in the second, the Salukis scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 3-1 lead. With the bases loaded Sal Frisella drew a walk to drive in the tying run. Cory Newman drove in a run on a fielder's choice and Dane Kerley singled to give SIU a 3-1 lead.
The Illini came right back with three runs of their own in the top of the fifth to retake the lead 4-3.
"We didn't do a good job pitching with the lead today. We walked five guys in eight innings. Clayton walked four guys in four innings which is too many, but he's getting better. We didn't run the bases well and couldn't get the big hit, leaving 12 guys on base. We need somebody to step up like they did against Northern Iowa," added Callahan.
In the bottom of the fifth the Salukis scored three more runs to take a 6-4 lead. Roman Schooley singled to drive in Luke Nelson. Schooley and Scott Hankey each scored on wild pitches to give SIU a two run lead.
The Illini came back with two runs in the top of the seventh on a double by Patrick Arlis to even the game at 6-6 and provide the final runs of the evening. SIU leads the all-time series 26-15-1, including a 6-4-1 mark under Dan Callahan.
Dane Kerley (3-for-4, RBI) led SIU. Schooley increased his hitting streak to five games with a (2-for-4, two runs scored, one RBI performance. Nelson is still swinging a hot bat, going 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Next up for SIU, the Salukis will travel to Terre Haute, Indiana for a four game series with Indiana State University on March 30-April 1.
