Louisville, Kty. -
Southern Illinois University Carbondale (6-7) was shut out by the University of Louisville (10-9) in game one of a three game series on Friday, March 9. The Salukis managed just five hits against Louisville senior Mike Tisdale (3-2) at Cardinal Stadium. SIU drops to 6-7 with the loss.
"You know it's a tough day when you look back and your only scoring threat was the first hitter of the game. Louisville's Mike Tisdale threw well against us. He changed speeds, had some funky arm action, and was tough for the hitters to pick up," said Dan Callahan, Saluki head coach. "The thing that is discouraging is that we have guys that aren't getting quality at bats. We're getting cheated and not swinging the bat well as a team, which puts more pressure on your pitching."
Josh Latimer (1-1) lasted three and a third innings, allowing four earned runs and four hits, while striking out three and walking three to suffer the loss.
"Pitching wise, the third inning was a disaster. Josh Latimer hits the number nine hitter to open the inning, walks three batters, balks, and throws a wild pitch. When your opponent is throwing as well as Tisdale did, you're not going to have a chance," added Callahan.
The Salukis started the game with a double by Dane Kerley, who was thrown out at third. Luke Nelson followed with a single, but never reached second. After Kerley was thrown out at third no other Saluki reached third in the game. Kerley's double was the closest SIU scoring threat of the day.
"We only had two bright spots today. Jerel Deitering did a tremendous job in relief (two and two thirds innings, three strikeouts, one hit, no walks) and Cory Newman is swinging the bat better," stated Callahan.
Cory Newman (2-for-3, double) led the Saluki hitting attack.
Louisville's Tisdale (3-2) struck out 11 batters and walked three in the complete game shut out.
SIU faces Louisville on Saturday, March 10 and Sunday, March 11 at 1 p.m. to wrap up the series in Louisville, Kentucky.
