Jonesboro, Ark. - Southern Illinois University's men's golf team finished ninth out of 13 teams at the Arkansas State Indian Classic on Monday-Tuesday, Apr. 2-3 at Ridge Point Country Club.
After shooting a fifth place score of 308 after the first day of play, SIU fell victim to some inclement weather in day two, and as a result, shot a last place score of 317 which proved to be the difference in the Salukis' ninth place showing. Recovering quite nicely, however, the Dawgs then shot a fifth place mark of 299 in the tournament's final day of play to cap off their three-round score of 924.
"I thought we played well against some quality competition (Illinois State, Arkansas State, South Florida, Southwest Missouri)," said head coach Leroy Newton. "We shot a good round during the first day, but then had to deal with some condusive weather which hurt us in day two. However, I am proud of how we regrouped to post our best score of the weekend at 299 yesterday."
Junior Brian Kolmer was the lone Saluki to finish among the top 20 individual placewinners. Kolmer shot rounds of 70, 80, and 84 to tie for 10th with a final score of 224. Also pacing SIU were Brandon Bullard (79-79-73--231) who tied for 34th and Brad Dunker (80-80-78--238) who tied for 53rd.
Arkansas State won the tournament with a final score of 880 while South Florida took second (895) and North Texas finished third (896).
