The Southern Illinois University Carbondale men's and women's track and field team will host the 3rd Annual Southern Illinois University Collegiate Series Track and Field Meet Saturday at the McAndrew Stadium track starting at 9 a.m.
For the men's the University of Illinois, Eastern Illinois and Indiana State comes to call while for the women it will be Eastern Illinois, Indiana State and Central Michigan.
The field events will start off at 9 a.m. followed at 12:45 p.m. by the ceremony to name the McAndrew Stadium running track the "Lew Hartzog Track" in honor of the longtime SIU head men's track coach (1961-84) . The running events will begin at 1 p.m.
This will not only be the first outdoor meet of the spring season for the women's team, but the fans will get to witness the first time running of the women's steeplechase to start off the afternoon session.
"The fans should get a kick out of the steeplechase with Erin Simone being the first one to run it for us ever," Saluki women's coach Don DeNoon said. "The fans should also take notice of Caryn Poliquin in the hammer throw, discus and shot put and Noa Beitler in the 1,500 and 800 meters. Both of those girls had great indoor seasons and I expect them to do no less during the outdoor season."
The Salukis will be without distant runner Katie Meehan for the season with a stress fracture in her leg. Also sitting out will be Rimma Turevsky, Desiree Cocks and Becky Cox with minor ailments.
The men's team is also hurting with Ryan Hauser, Kevin Mills, Greg Denagall, Dan Stone, Andrew Warnsing and Brandon Dell 'Aringa sitting out.
"I think this is going to be a tough competition with all three teams coming in being good teams," SIU men's coach Cameron Wright said. "We are a bit thin with those six sitting out with minor hamstring injuries, but the rest of the team is ready to put on a good performance."
Adam Judge and Joe Ziebert started the outdoor season last week at the Snowbird Invitational by winning the hammer throw and the 800 meter run, respectively. Ziebert is also suffering from a hamstring injury, but is expected to run. Also coming on strong is former Carbondale Terrier Joe Hill in the high and long jump.
"Another runner to look for is Ian Lowthian," Wright added. "He is a freshman from England and is ready for a break out meet and I think this might be the one. This is our only home meet of the season, so we are real stoked to perform well in front of our home fans. We really appreciate our loyal fans and we hope for good weather so we can put some fans in the stands to check out four good track teams."
