Despite going into the meet with a less than fuller compliment of athletes, the Southern Illinois University Carbondale men's and women's track and field team put forth some solid performances Saturday at the McAndrew Stadium "Lew Hartzog" track.
Both teams had key personnel sitting out the meet, but still managed to win a few events and place high in others to provide hope for a good outdoor season.
SIU's Caryn Poliquin provisionally qualified for the NCAA championships by winning the hammer throw with a heave of 185'01". In addition, the senior from Gurnee finished fourth in the shot put (40?06?), fifth in the discus (132'05") and sixth in the javelin (99'08").
Also winning for the Saluki women was Noa Beitler, a freshman from Rehovot, Israel, who took the title in the 1,500 meter run. Sprinter Yolanda Mask had a good meet finishing third in both the 100 meter (12.39) and the 200 meter (25.11) dashes.
The Saluki women finished fourth with a team score of 102.5 behind meet champion Central Michigan (216.5), Indiana State (201) and Eastern Illinois (120).
The Saluki men finished third with a team score of 108 to finish ahead of the University of Illinois which finished with 83 points. Indiana State won the meet with a score 199 followed by Eastern Illinois in third (174).
Former Carbondale Terrier Joe Hill won the high jump clearing 6 feet, 4 inches. Also taking first was Nyles Stuart in the long jump with a leap of 23 feet, 6 1/4 inches with Nate Alexander making it clean sweep in the jumps with a win in the triple jump off a jump of 43'10.75". Alexander also finished fifth in the long jump with a leap of 22'11.75".
Also having a good meet was Ian Lowthian who finished second in the 400 meter dash with a time 48.95 while coming in fourth in the 200 meter dash missing the top time by just over a second with a run of 22.38. Brock Lovelace was strong in the javelin with a throw of 194?07.00 to finish second.
Both Saluki teams are next in action April 6-7 when they split their squads to compete at both the All Sport Relays in Cape Girardeau, Mo., and the Texas Relays in Austin.
