Salukis Fall to Southeast Missouri, 11-5

Southern Illinois University Carbondale (12-17, 6-6 MVC) allowed five runs in the first two innings and never recovered in an 11-5 non-conference loss to Southeast Missouri State University (20-10, 4-2 OVC) on Wednesday, April 4 at Abe Martin Field.
Trailing 6-0 in the sixth inning, the Salukis scored three runs in the bottom half to cut the lead to 6-3. Roman Schooley singled to drive in John Clem and Justin Maurath double to score two runs to cut the lead in half.
SEMO responded with three runs of their own in the top of the seventh inning and the Salukis added two more runs in the seventh to cut the lead to 9-5, but the Indians added single runs in the eighth and ninth innings to put SIU away.
Josh Joiner (0-1) suffered the loss in his first college start. Joiner pitched five innings and allowed six runs (five earned) on six hits. He struck out one and walked two.
Clem (2-for-2, two runs, walk), Maurath (3-for-4, 2-RBIs, double) and Luke Nelson (2-for-4, double, RBI, run scored) led the Salukis. Roy Carter singled in his first college at bat as a pinch hitter for SIU.
Todd Pennington (4-1) picked up the win with one inning of relief for the Indians.
SIU still has a 34-15 lead in the series against Southeast Missouri State.
The Salukis will be on the road this weekend in Omaha, Nebraska for a four game series against Creighton University on April 6-8.
