Salukis Place Second Most Athletes On MVC Scholar-Athlete Team

St. Louis, MO. - The Southern Illinois University Carbondale men's and women's track and field team placed the second most athletes combined on the 2001 Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete team.
The Saluki women placed six athletes while the men added five for a total of 11 only surpassed by the 12 placed by Indiana State. The criteria for the Valley Scholar-Athlete Track and Field team was 1) The student must have placed in the top six at either the indoor or outdoor Valley championship. 2) The student must have a GPA of 3.00 or higher. 3) Freshmen and first-year junior college transfer students were not eligible.
The Saluki?s Loren King was the top male athlete in grade point average overall with a perfect 4.00 during his graduate studies and qualified by placing second in the high jump at the indoor championships.
The other Saluki men to make the team were Dan Harrell (3.61-mechanical engineering), who finished tied for 5th in the pole vault with his teammate Dan Stone (3.29-art), Joe Zeibert (3.42-geography), who finished 5th in the 1,500, and Nashville?s Jared Ribacki (3.16-physical education), who finished 5th in the relays.
For the women, Marian Appiah-Kubi was tops for the Salukis with a 3.81 GPA in communications disorders and qualified by being a member of the indoor champion distance medley relay team.
The other Saluki women to qualify were two of her three teammates on the relay team, Becky Cox (3.43-elementary education) and Julia Roundtree (3.47-english), in addition to Katie Meehan (3.68-management), who finished third in the indoor 5000, Caryn Poliquin (3.21-radio-TV), who finished fourth in the discus, and Rimma Turevsky (3.56-foreign language/international trade), who finished fourth in the indoor triple jump.
