Carbondale, Ill. - Southern Illinois University women's basketball head coach Lori Opp announced earlier this week that assistant coach Carl Clayton will join the Saluki staff.
Clayton, who earned both his undergraduate (Food and Nutrition, 1993) and masters degrees (Physical Education, 1995) from SIU, returns to his alma mater from Blackburn College where he helped coach the Beavers to a 15-9 record and 10-4 (2nd) conference finish this past season.
Prior to his two-year stint at Blackburn, Clayton also gained experience as an assistant coach at both Saint Louis University (1998-99) and the University of Missouri-St. Louis (1997-98). While at SLU, Clayton helped coordinate team travel, assist with on-campus recruiting visits and on-floor coaching and monitor student-athletes' academic progress in addition to other responsibilities. Meanwhile, at UMSL, he served as recruiting coordinator, conducted pre-game and post-game strategy lectures and film breakdown and planned camps/fundraising events among other duties.
In addition to his accomplishments on the basketball court, Clayton also boasts a solid administrative and teaching background. Working as a Physical Education Instructor for three years and holding such positions as Community Youth Coordinator (City of Carbondale), Event Manager (62 Sports Group) and Analyst (WCIL Radio), Clayton brings a vast array of knowledge and experience to the Saluki women's program.
"Carl is a great addition to our staff and it's nice that he has the opportunity to come back to his alma mater," said Opp. "Carl will be a great fit for this program and we are very happy to have him with us."
