Giat and Baker Named To MVC Scholar Athlete Team

CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois University cross country runners Katie Meehan, Doron Giat and Eli Baker have been named to the 2002 Missouri Valley Conference Scholar Athlete team, based on outstanding performances on the course and in the classroom.
Meehan earns the honor for the second-straight season. The senior from Sedalia, Mo., placed eighth this year at the MVC Championships, in addition to maintaining a 3.68 GPA on a 4.0 scale. Meehan, who is majoring in management, was an all-MVC choice for the first time this year, and finished with the best 5K time in the Valley (17:55).
Baker and Giat earned MVC scholar athlete honors in their first year of eligibility.
Baker, a sophomore from Marion, placed 19th at the Valley Championships this year, in addition to maintaining a 3.20 GPA. Baker is majoring in education.
Giat, a junior who transfered to SIU from Tel-Aviv University in Israel, finished sixth at the MVC Championships this year, while maintaining a 3.13 GPA. Giat, who is majoring in electrical engineering, adds the scholar athlete honor to his two all-MVC cross country selections.
The Scholar-Athlete team is a unique Verizon/CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) standards for academic all-America voting. Those eligible must have at least a 3.00 cumulative grade point average (4.00 scale). Student-athletes must have reached sophomore academic and athletic standing at their institutions, and they must have completed at least one full academic year at their institution. The top-10 finishers at the league championships who meet the criteria earn first-team honors.
