CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois University men's and women's cross country teams will be at the NCAA Midwest Cross Country Regional Saturday at Illinos State University in Normal.
The women's 6K race will start at 10:30 a.m., with the men's 8K race following at about 11:30 a.m.
The Saluki men's team will be represented by Doron Giat and Marion native Eli Baker. Giat placed sixth at the recent Missouri Valley Conference Championships, while Baker was 19th. Both runners were named to the MVC Scholar Athlete team this week and SIU coach Matt McLelland believes they will represent SIU well.
"We have had two good weeks of practice since conference and the guys are feeling ready," said McLelland. "They want to end the season on a high note heading into the track season. We should have a successful meet."
The Saluki men finished 15th at the Midwest Regional in Carbondale last year.
The Saluki women will be represented by Katie Meehan, Noa Beitler, Jodi Huddlestun, Lindsey Campos and Erin Simone.
Meehan placed eight at the MVC Championships, while Beitler was 20th. Meehan recorded the top 5K time in the Valley this season (17:55) and was named to the MVC Scholar Athlete team for the second straight year.
"Our top-two runners have set as a goal to be All-District," SIU women's head coach Matt Sparks said. "This is a large race with over 250 competitors from over 30 schools. As a team we would like to place in the top 10 after a 19th place finish in 2001."
