Women's Cross Country Places 5th At Valley Championships

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Led by a sixth-place finish from Doron Giat, and an eighth-place time from Katie Meehan, the Southern Illinois University men's and women's cross country teams placed seventh and fifth, respectively, Saturday at the Missouri Valley Championships at Indiana State University.
Giat and Meehan's efforts earned them all-conference honors, as they led their respective teams to their predicted pre-meet finishes. Meehan, a senior, clocked in at 18:21 in a 5K race, while Giat, a junior, finished an 8K race in 25:26.
The Saluki women finished with 128 points, behind meet champion Southwest Missouri St. (39), Bradley (66), Illinois State (82) and Northern Iowa (111). Indiana State (146), Creighton (155), Evansville (208) and Drake (210) rounded out the women's field.
Illinois State won the men's title with 44 points, just in front of Drake (47). Northern Iowa (95), Southwest Missouri State (112), Indiana State (119), Wichita State (143), SIU, Creighton (221), Evansville (254) and Bradley (272) rounded out the men's field.
The all-conference honor was the first of Meehan's career. The native of Sedalia, Mo., finished her SIU career in fine fashion, finishing with the best 5K time in the conference overall (17:55). Meehan placed 18th in last year's MVC's.
Giat recorded his second-straight all-conference time. The native of Ganei, Israel, placed fourth in last season's MVCs.
SIU's next-best finish came from Marion native Eli Baker, who placed 19th with a time of 26:03. Noa Beitler had the second-best SIU women's time, placing 20th with a time of 19:07.
Jodi Huddlestun (25th, 19:14), Ty Davis (39th, 19:52) and Erin Simone (41st, 19:57) rounded out the Saluki women's top-five.
Tony LaChiana (44th, 27:11.10), Ryan Hauser (45th, 27:15) and Steve Murray (47th, 27:24) rounded out the men's top-five.
