Carbondale, Ill. - Southern Illinois University will host the Saluki Fast Start track and field meet Friday at the SIU Student Recreation Center. Field events will begin at noon and running events start at 4:30 p.m.
Joining SIU's teams will be Southeast Missouri State, the University of Indianapolis, and Lincoln University. The University of Arkansas and the University of Louisville will bring their women's squads and Rend Lake Community College's men's team will compete.
"It will be a low key meet," said women's head coach Connie Price-Smith. "We're just looking to see progress in the training that we've been doing this fall. I think some of the athletes will be surprised by the outcome."
"We want to break up some of the monotony of training," said assistant women's coach Lawrence Johnson. "It's an opportunity for them to see where they've progressed from last year at this time. It's good to get the first meet jitters out of the way before break, and it's also a test for the coaches as well as the athletes to see what is working and what is not."
Both Price-Smith and men's head coach Cameron Wright said some of the distance runners who ran cross country this fall will not compete in this non-scored meet.
"We've been training hard," said Wright. "We're excited to compete against other people, and the guys are fired up to see what their training has done for them this fall. Our goal is to remain healthy, compete hard, and win some events."
