CARBONDALE --? - Coming off another outstanding performance in the weight throw, Southern Illinois University junior Adam Judge was named the Missouri Valley Conference Field Athlete of the Week on Wednesday.
Judge, a native of Des Moines, Ia., shined in his home state last weekend at the highly competitive Iowa State Classic, where he met an NCAA provisional qualifying standard for the second meet in a row with a seventh-place toss of 66 feet, 4 1/2 inches. Judge's placement probably would have been higher had he not been competing against three of the top four throwers in the NCAA at the meet. Still, Judge's toss was the second-best of his career, the best being a Saluki-record throw of 68 feet, six inches, recorded at the Illini Classic just one week before.
Judge is currently sitting atop the MVC-best list in the weight throw and is one of four Salukis to earn "Athlete of the Week" honors this year. Junior Latrice Gray and freshman Jaanus Uudmae also earned "Field Athlete of the Week" honors earlier in the year, and sophomore Jeff Young has been honored as "Track Athlete of the Week" once this year.
Those four athletes and the rest of the Saluki men and women will be back in action this weekend at the USA Open at the SIU Recreation Center.
