Starkville, Miss. - With the tournament title already in its grasp, Southern Illinois (4-1) concluded the Mississippi State Bulldog Classic earlier today with a 1-0 win over Colorado State.
SIU, who also defeated the Rams by an identical 1-0 score yesterday, was led by Elissa Hopkins who went 2-for-3 with a triple.
The Salukis scored the game's only run in the fourth inning when Haley Viefhaus led off with a two-out single. With Viefhaus on first, Maria Damico and Katie Jordan then singled consecutively. Jordan's, hit, however, scored Viefhaus for the win.
Junior Katie Kloess (2-0) picked up her second win on the mound this season after lasting through 6.2 innings. Kloess was relieved by freshman Amy Harre with two out and the tying run on second base. Harre then fanned the game's final batter to earn her second save on the young season.
SIU combined for seven hits in the game as the Salukis had three freshmen named to the Bulldog Classic's All-Tournament Team. Harre was named the tournament's MVP, while Kelly Creek and Jordan also garnered all-tournament team honors.
The Salukis will return to action next weekend at the Florida Atlantic Invitational (Feb. 22-24). SIU will begin play on Friday with games against Rutgers (11 a.m.) and Florida International (3 p.m.).
