Soswa Advances To Semifinals Of MVC Individual Championships

Des Moines, Iowa - SIU freshman Lukasz Soswa advanced in the winners bracket on day one of the 2002 MVC Men's Individual Tennis Championships with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Sean Kembell of SMS. Soswa, playing in the #5 Singles Flight, was the lone Saluki to stay in the winners bracket after day one. Soswa will face Juan Escalante of Wichita State in a semifinal on Saturday at 11 a.m.
Richard Booth (#3 Singles) beat Rishi Garbharran of SMS 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 before losing 6-1, 6-3 to Lovre Brajkovic of Indiana State. Peter Bong (#1 Singles) lost 7-5, 6-4 to Harry Walsh of Northern Iowa, Alon Savidor (#2 Singles) fell 6-0, 6-4 to Jason Smit of Illinois State, Julian Angel Botero (#4 Singles) dropped a 7-5, 6-3 decision to Kevin Otto of Creighton and Brian Blake (#6 Singles) was beaten in his opener 6-2, 6-1 by Marek Blaskovic.
The five Salukis who ended the day with a loss will play in the consolation bracket on Saturday. Doubles results were not available at press time.
The 2002 MVC Men's Individual Tennis Championships opens the spring tennis season for the Salukis and includes all ten schools in the MVC.
