CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois football coach Jerry Kill discussed the 21-man class of signees who made official commitments to the Salukis on Wednesday.
"The recruiting process has been competitive, and we have tried to go get that upper echelon athlete that can get us over the hump,." Kill said. "We didn't match up size-wise and certainly strength wise with anybody last year. We've recruited some Division I-looking players, and I think we got what we needed."
The class features 17 freshmen, three junior college transfers and a transfer from the University of Illinois. The transfers are all currently enrolled at SIU and will be eligible immediately.
Breakdown of the class by position: defensive linemen (5), offensive linemen (4), running backs (3), defensive backs (3), wide receivers (2), linebackers (2), quarterbacks (1), tight ends (1).
Breakdown of the class by state: Illinois (5), Missouri (5), Ohio (2), Tennessee (2), Kansas (2), Michigan (1), Pennsylvania (1), California (1), Florida (1), Indiana (1).
Kill said the Salukis may sign an additional player or two in the next week.
"We're still working on a couple others that probably thought they were going to sign with the University of Illinois or Notre Dame today, but some things happened. So, we're still working hard."
