Carbondale, Ill. - The Southern Illinois University men's tennis team will face DePaul University on Saturday, March 2 in Chicago, Illinois at 5 p.m. in the first dual meet of the season.
"We're pretty excited to start our dual match season against a team near the top 50. It will be one of our toughest matches of the season. We have a chance to win some matches and hopefully we have enough wins to win the match," said Missy Jeffrey, Saluki head coach.
The DePaul match will be the first competition for SIU since the MVC Individual Championships on January 25-27.
"This will be a good test to see how we've improved and what we can do against a top-50 caliber team. Four of our top six players have never played in a college dual season. We want to win matches and show people that this is a new program," stated Jeffrey.
The Salukis have added Gian Carlo Remigio, a junior transfer from the University of the Philippines, to the lineup in the last two weeks to provide depth and experience.
"Gian is an excellent player from the Phillipines. He was ranked number one in the Under-10, Under-12, Under-14, Under-16 and top three in the Under-18s," added Jeffery. "He was very successful his first two years at the University of the Phillipines and knows how to win and has plenty of experience. The competition level will be high here but he'll do well at the #6 singles position."
