St. Louis, Mo. - Southern Illinois University junior outfielder Ross Kowzan was named the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week on Monday, March 11. The award is the first for the DuQuoin, Ill. native and junior college transfer from Southeastern Illinois College.
"Ross has been an incredible part of our strong start this season," said Dan Callahan, Saluki head coach. "We knew he could help us but he has put up phenomenal numbers this year and is an important part of our lineup."
Kowzan led SIU to five wins in five games last week with a .571 (8-for-14) performance with three doubles, a triple, seven RBI, six runs, five walks and no strikeouts in five games. He started and hit safely in four of five games including a 4-for-4, five-RBI, three-run, one-walk effort in the 17-8 win in the final game against Eastern Michigan.
For the season, Kowzan is batting .543 with a .771 slugging percentage and a .610 on base percentage with four stolen bases in four attempts.
The Salukis are 9-2 and have won seven straight games heading into this week's Irish Classic In San Antonio, Texas, where they will play four games in four days (Mar. 13-16) against Arkansas-Little Rock, host Notre Dame and Creighton.
