Cape Girardeau, Mo. - Adie Viefhaus and Karrie Fortman each scattered two hits apiece to lead Southern Illinois (27-14) to a 3-1 win over Southeast Missouri State (12-24) earlier today at Southeast Softball Complex. Game two of the doubleheader was cancelled due to lightning and rain.
The win marked SIU's fourth straight over the Otahkians as the Salukis have now won eight of their last 10 games.
SIU struck early in the top of the first when Haley Viefhaus singled to center with one away. Katie Jordan came up next and also hit safely to push Viefhaus to third. Kelly Creek then grounded out to short, but Viefhaus scored to give the Dawgs a 1-0 lead.
With two out in the bottom of the first, Katie Cerneka reached on a fielder's choice. Courtney Eklund then hit a rocket to leftfielder Katie Jordan who misjudged the ball, and as a result, allowed Cerneka to score all the way from first.
Knotted at one apiece, the Salukis cashed in on two Otahkian errors in the top of the second to regain the lead which would stand for the rest of the game.
Maria Damico began the attack with a well-hit routine fly to right, but Eklund dropped the ball and the play turned into a three-base miscue. Damico then scored from the hot corner on an error by third baseman Jamie Birk which also allowed Jami Weddle to reach first.
Tara Glasco, who pinch ran for Weddle, was brought home on a single by Adie Viefhaus to cap off the 3-1 win.
Harre, who has registered six straight complete game wins, moved to 16-8 on the year. She retired 16-of-17 Otahkian batters from the first batter in the first inning to the first batter in the seventh. Harre was touched for just three hits, while striking out nine.
Kelly Birk (6-9) suffered the loss for Southeast Missouri State. Birk struck out two batters and allowed one earned run on a seven-hitter.
With SIU ahead 1-0 in the second inning of game two, the nightcap was officially called at 5:19 p.m. Soon after lightning was spotted, both teams went to their respective dugouts and never resumed play.
SIU will return to league action at Bradley on April 27-28. The Dawgs will face the Braves in a three-game series beginning Saturday with a doubleheader at noon.
