Peoria, Ill. - Freshman right-hander Amy Harre threw a one-hitter with 10 strikeouts to lead Southern Illinois (29-14, 15-6) to a 2-1 win as the Salukis swept Bradley (11-25, 6-13) in a doubleheader earlier today at Laura Bradley Park. SIU concluded the day with a 5-0 shutout in the nightcap.
For Harre, the win marked her seventh straight on the mound as she improved to 17-8 on the year.
Harre was not the only one having a stellar pitching performance as Bradley's Sandra Britt no-hit the Salukis through four complete innings.
Britt's no-hitter, however, was ruined in the top of the fifth when Jen Guenther took her third delivery deep over the wall in left center to give the Dawgs a 1-0 lead. Guenther's solo shot marked both her second of the season and second in SIU's last three games.
SIU homered again in the top of the sixth when Tahira Saafir sent Britt's first offering deep over the wall in left center. Saafir's bomb marked her first of the season as the Salukis extended their lead to 2-0.
In what appeared as if SIU would cling to a two-run shutout, the Salukis nearly self-destructed in the bottom of the seventh.
Harre, who threw a no-hitter through six complete, was tagged for a lead off single by Amy Tubbs. Jessica Conant followed with a fielder's choice and Tubbs moved safely to second on an error by first baseman Guenther.
With runners on first and second, Harre struck out both Christy Lawless and Sarah Mancuso, consecutively. Rachel Gensch then hit a slow-roller to the mound, but Harre bobbled the ball allowing the Braves to load the bases.
Brittany Mynsberg gave the Salukis another golden opportunity to end the game with a routine grounder to short on the next play, but Adie Viefhaus muffed the throw to first enabling Tubbs to score an unearned run. Tubbs' run was all the Braves could muster, however, as Harre struck out Annie Luttropp for to ice the 2-1 win.
SIU, who committed four errors, scattered three of the game's four hits. Guenther and Saafir each homered, while Kelly Creek singled.
Harre, who pinned the Braves to just one hit, was seemingly unstoppable as she retired 19-of-20 batters before her no-hit bid was spoiled in seventh. Harre's 10 Ks also marked the third time she has struck out 10 or more batters this season.
In the nightcap, SIU scored in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings en route to its five-run shutout.
Freshman Katie Jordan led off the first Saluki rally with a double in the bottom of the fourth. Jordan, who advanced to third on a SAC-bunt by Creek, then scored on a Guenther groundout to second which gave the Dawgs a 1-0 lead.
Two more hits in the fifth allowed A. Viefhaus to come home after she had reached on a fielder's choice with one out. Back-to-back singles by Haley Viefhaus and Jordan quickly moved A. Viefhaus to third before scoring on a sacrifice fly by Creek.
Ahead 2-0, the Salukis exploded for three runs off five hits in the sixth to blow the game wide open. A. Viefhaus and Creek each had RBI-singles, while Jordan belted an RBI-double to cap off the 5-0 win.
Jordan went a blistering 3-for-3 with two doubles a run scored and one RBI to lead the Salukis offensively. Saafir also doubled, while A. Viefhaus, Creek, H. Viefhaus, Tara Glasco and Karrie Fortman also posted hits.
Renee Mueller (7-4) picked up the win throwing 5.2 innings with three strikeouts. She was then replaced by Katie Kloess who pitched the final 1.1 innings to earn her first save of the season.
SIU will close out its 2002 regular season next weekend with a three-game series at Wichita State.
