Freshman Kelsey Toussaint just missed an NCAA provisional qualifying time in the 100-meter dash Saturday, leading a partial Southern Illinois University-Carbondale women's track and field team at the SIUE Twilight Open.
Toussaint clocked in at 12.01 seconds in the race, just .06 seconds off the NCAA provisional standard, and good enough to place first, just in front of teammate Shaneka Williams, who recorded a season-best time of 12.07.
Only a few other Salukis competed in the meet, but where SIU lacked in quanity they made up for in quality.
Marian Appiah-Kubi placed second in the 200-meter dash at 25.5 seconds, and Katy Ritten was also second in the shot put (42-0). Susan Miller added a third-place finish in the 400-meter dash (1:00.5) and the Salukis won the 400-meter relay (47.94) and the 1,600-meter relay (4:08.2).
The unscored meet was hampered by rain and lightning most of the day.
