Baseball Falls To SEMO 8-2

Cape Girardeau, Mo. - Southern Illinois University (15-9, 4-4 MVC) lost its fifth straight game to Southeast Missouri State University (11-11, 2-1 OVC) 8-2 on Wednesday at Capaha Field.
SIU jumped out to a 1-0 lead in its first at bat after Ross Kowzan doubled to lead off the game and Toby Barnett drove him in on a double play ground out.
SEMO countered with two runs in the bottom of the first on two hits, a walk and an error to take the lead off freshman Bryan Rueger (0-1), who made his first college start. Rueger allowed three Indian runs, two earned, in two innings to pick up his first loss.
Southeast added three runs in the fifth inning off Jim Vogel, one of six Saluki relievers, to take a 6-1 lead.
SIU added a single run in the sixth inning on Toby Barnett's RBI single to cut the lead to 6-2 but could get no closer. The Indians added single runs in the seventh and eighth innings for the 8-2 final margin.
Andy Sheridan (2-0) picked up the win for SEMO with five and two third innings of five-hit pitching. He struck out four, walked two and allowed both Saluki runs.
Kowzan (2-for-4, run), Jeff Stanek (1-for-2, run, 2 walks) and Greg Andrews (1-for-3) led SIU.
The Salukis continue MVC play with a four game series against Illinois State in Normal, Ill. on April 5-7. SIU will play a single game Friday at 4 p.m., a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m. and a single game Sunday at 1 p.m.
SIU NOTES: The Salukis added a game at home on Tuesday, April 9 against Greenville (Ill.) College at 3 p.m. Cory Newman's streak of 78 straight starts in centerfield came to an end against SEMO on Wednesday when he did not play.
